Venue: Acer Arena

BJ Penn is settling back into the welterweight division after losing back-to-back bouts to Frankie Edgar at lightweight and knocking out veteran Matt Hughes at 170 pounds this past November. The future Hall of Famer seems more comfortable at the heavier weight class, and has shown that he’s still a dangerous striker with his KO over Hughes.

Jon Fitch could be the most under-appreciated fighter in all of MMA. The 32 year old has hit somewhat of a glass ceiling in the division, winning five straight bouts since losing to champion Georges St-Pierre back in August 2008. Fitch hasn’t proven he can finish fights like Penn, taking all five of those recent victories on the judges’ score cards.

Main card:
Welterweight bout: B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch
Middleweight bout: Michael Bisping vs. Jorge Rivera
Lightweight bout: George Sotiropoulos vs. Dennis Siver
Welterweight bout: Carlos Condit vs. Chris Lytle
Middleweight bout: Kyle Noke vs. Chris Camozzi

Preliminary card (ESPN U.K.)
Lightweight bout: Ross Pearson vs. Spencer Fisher
Heavyweight bout: Chris Tuchscherer vs. Mark Hunt

Middleweight bout: Nick Ring vs. Riki Fukuda

Pacquiao-Mosley Fight US Press Tour Begins on February 10

Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley won’t have to shovel their way through the press tour.

The fight promoter, Bob Arum, said the weather is improving, following an epic winter storm that affected more than a third of the United States, and should continue improve in time for the press tour that begins Feb. 10.

“The storm has ended and the weather should start getting warmer by tomorrow. There’s no need to bring your shovels,” Arum told The Star in a phone interview yesterday morning.

CBS/Showtime Takes Pacquiao VS Mosley Fight

Bob Arum just took a deal and signed for the Manny Pacquiao – Shane Mosley boxing fight to be shown on CBS/Showtime on 7th of may and leaving HBO. For the normal fan, that doesn’t mean much of anything at all. Pacquiao fans are rejoicing at the news, happy for their hero Pacquiao but not fully grasping the fact that it won’t mean reduced prices for the Mosley-Pacquiao fight. All it will mean is that the fight could make more money for Arum, Pacquiao and Mosley if the fight brings in more fans to purchase it on PPV.

According to Dan Rafael, the advantage of the Pacquiao-Mosley fight being shown on CBS/Showtime is that it will be able to take advantage of advertising taking place during commercial breaks during prime time hours on CBS stations. This wouldn’t be just advertised on Showtime. It would be advertised on CBS stations as well. Needless to say, this will bring in more fans to purchase the fight. In addition to that, there will be separate preview shows similar to the HBO 24/7 series that will be displayed on CBS stations.

This all sounds great but what’s the point of all this if the general fan isn’t going to benefit with lower PPV costs? If it still costs $60 or whatever, how is that a gain for you and me? So what if more people watch it, how am I gaining from this? I still would have to pay tons of money to see this mismatch. And while we’re on the subject of mismatches, what good is it that more people are seeing Pacquiao fight? If he’s going to be facing mismatched opponents like 39-year-old Shane Mosley, a painfully slow Antonio Margarito and a beaten up and weight drained Miguel Cotto, how is that a great benefit if it’s being seen by more fans?

I would think it would better for fans if they got to see Pacquiao face Sergio Martinez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Andre Berto or Floyd Mayweather Jr. But Arum isn’t matching Pacquiao with those guys. We’re seeing Pacquiao being put in with fighters that he has beat before the fight even starts. If Pacquiao is going to be seen by more people due to the new CBS/Showtime deal, I don’t see that as a benefit for boxing fans and I don’t think it’s good for the sport if Pacquiao is going to be set up with nice little mismatches every time out.
